weekly.tf - Issue #54 - Atlantis, Terraform providers, Terraform at Qovery

Nish Krishnan and Sarvar Muminov from Lyft describe their journey from Jenkins to Atlantis for managing infrastructure. They also cover system architecture and security aspects in a good amount of detail.

I highly recommend this article by Dan Williams (btw, loveholidays is hiring) for everyone who is interested in Atlantis, Policy as Code, conftest. Loveholidays manages all its infrastructure on Google Cloud using Terraform and Atlantis.

Various blog posts

Pierre Mavro (CTO of Qovery) explains that Terraform is not the golden hammer by talking about how it has been used at Qovery over time. "Advises and suggestion" section closer to the end is very much point on - split your configurations and use data sources to connect pieces (read more); also use the right tool for the job. AB: it is possible to manage unmanageable with Terraform and deploy everything but do you really want it? :)

These videos are by experts who have been building providers for some years (e.g. Brian Flad, Katy Moe, Paddy Carver, and more)! The videos go beyond the basics in explaining how to build an excellent Terraform provider.

Open-source projects

This project is not really using Terraform but I think it would be interesting to many who are currently using Terraform to accomplish the same. Read this document for comparison.

A Linux desktop in the cloud which is reachable via browser using Apache Guacamole and deployed automatically via Terraform and Ansible.

Atlantis

I and Bryant Biggs (one of the core maintainers of Terraform AWS modules, and an experienced Terraform user) will be talking about Atlantis: what is it, how we can use it.

I am sure that some readers also wonder whether we still have a place for Atlantis nowadays when we have many of TACOS (Terraform Automation & Collaboration Software) available. Let's talk about it!

"Terraform in Action" Book by Scott Winkler
